My Eight Month Old

I don't know how much that I have updated about Davyn, so I might be repeating myself here, but oh well.
Davyn has been sitting up since 5 months old. These pictures were taken just after Christmas. Davyn got his first tooth when he was 6 months old. Right now he has six. If you look closely at these pictures, you can see some of the teeth. He still is a good eater. He eats everything in sight. When I last took him to the doctor two weeks ago, he weighed 20 pounds. We are taking him in on Friday for a consultation of his ears to the same Ear, Nose, Throat Dr that Taegyn went to for her tubes and where deKyn went for his adenoids. I am actually excited about this because we have been taking him into the doctor for his ears every two to three weeks for three months because of infections.
Davyn is about to reach another miles stone too...CRAWLING! It is an exciting and daunting thing. I know he will be so much happier when he can move to where he wants on his own. However, he will be crawling after me attached to my legs the whole time! That is something that I am not looking forward to.
I would be surprised too if it takes him until he's over a year to walk. He right now prefers to stand and try to walk holding our hands then being on the floor on his knees. Anyway, we'll see how it goes.

PDD-NOS is the official diagnosis

Well, we have been getting deKyn evaluated since September and we finally went in for our final consultaion. PDD-NOS is his official diagnosis. What it stands for: Pervasive Developmental Disorder- Not Otherwise Specified.
What it means? It is a diagnosis on the autism spectrum. Let me clarify though, deKyn is not autistic, however he has enough tendencies that make him walk the line of autism and that is why he is on the spectrum.
We learned a lot of things about deKyn through this evaluation that we pretty much already knew but they just clarified it for us. For instance, deKyn is behind in social behaviors and in language. They explained that for deKyn, he is not understanding verbal communication the way that other kids his age do. Meaning, if we tell him to go pick the toys up in his room, he doesn't understand what we are actually asking him to do. We were told that it would be best if we did "role playing" and did picture based learning with him to try and help him "see" what we are trying to tell him to do.
For those of you that didn't know, deKyn had his adenoids out when he was three because that is what was initially imparing his learning and speech in the begining. What we don't know is how much of his problem with language and speech has to do with this fact of another underlying problem. They seem to think that it's because of his adenoids that he's behind but aren't 100% sure. However, me and Cory feel that they were removed over a year ago and that he would have caught up more by now. We feel it is something else other then JUST his adenoids.
We were also told that he is behind socially. He doesn't quite understand the social ques given by peers, teachers, adults, and even us as parents. For instance, he doesn't understand that someone telling him that they don't want to play means just that. Or if one of his friends gets hurt it doesn't cross his mind to ask them if they are okay and try to help them. He doesn't quite understand why giving turns and sharing is important. They gave us some suggestions on how to teach him the social norms for him to thrive in a social setting. Again we were told that "cartoon-y" type movies, pictures, or shows that dipict how you would act in social situtaions would really help him with this, as well as doing and seeing "role-playing".
We were also told that he has ADHD tendencies but that he is still too young to tell if that is just because of his age or if it's an actual problem.
We will continue him with his Special-ed pre-school where he gets a speech therapist, and where they also are helping him with his social behaviors and language skills.
Even though we feel good about his diagnosis, we feel that they are missing something. The times where he was getting evaluated he was one-on-one with the evaluator in a quiet room. They didn't see what happens to deKyn when there is change or when deKyn has one of his meltdowns over nothing and the fact there is no pulling him out of his meltdown. There is just other little things that are a little concerning that they didn't get to see in the hour and a half once a week that they saw him. We brought up some of these concerns at our meeting and they said that we should see some improvment with deKyn within the next year and if not, a year later take him back for more testing.
So that is where we are at right now. Where will we go from here? We will try to do their suggestions and pray that we will find something that will work great for deKyn.

Decorating the Christmas Tree and Christmas

Let's play catch-up...

Here is Halloween. deKyn had the swine flu on Halloween so he had to wear a hospital mask under his skeleton mask so that he wouldn't get anyone sick. Taegyn was Little Red Riding Hood and Davyn was just dressed up to be warm. Next year we will dress him up as something but I didn't want to spend the money on a costume for him this year. Taegyn I thought was so cute, but she wouldn't let me get a picture of her by herself. We didn't stay out trick-or-treating for long, but they sure got a lot of candy!

Let the break-down's begin...

Who am I kidding? The break-downs started the moment I got pregnant with Davyn and have yet to ease up all the way. I had a really bad hormonal day yesterday. You would think with Davyn now being 7 months old, that the hormones would have corrected themselves already. It's probably because I am still nursing.
I have felt a little overwhelmed this past month with trying to finish up my semester of school, finishing up work and trying to be supportive of Cory's new job. The frustration of the lack of communication skills that me and Cory seem to have lately has been a huge contributor too. Not to mention it's the holidays and they are just stressful in-and-of-themselves.
I was looking forward to yesterday's church session. The Christmas Sundays are always one of my favorites of the year. However, I didn't get to enjoy it at all yesterday with my breakdown. I hate to cry, especially for everyone else to see.
My frustration level finally hit it's peak yesterday morning. Cory woke me up a half hour before he had to be to church for choir practice and got himself ready, headed out the door and said he'd meet me at church. Meanwhile, he left me with three kids who weren't dressed, hadn't eaten, didn't have their hair done and two of the three were screaming and grouchy. I was trying to get Taegyn ready while keeping Davyn from screaming his head off because I wasn't holding him and I had deKyn crying in my other ear telling me he didn't want to go to church. Somehow I made it to church only ten minutes late for our meeting with the bishop. Cory and I had tithing settlement and the bishop asked me to offer a prayer. I had a feeling he would ask me when I was on my way to church, and I was coming up with all these excuses in my head to give him when the time came. "Sorry bishop, I really am not in the right mood to say the prayer right now." That's what I wanted to say, but instead I gave a small little laugh and started the prayer that turned into the start of the waterworks. After I said amen, the bishop asked if everything was alright. That is when my weeks and months of frustration came out.
I composed myself by the end of our conversation with the bishop and went and sat in the chapel to wait for church to start. It was fine for the first twenty minutes, but then deKyn started to yell at Taegyn and wouldn't stop. Cory was up on the stand so I was in the bench by myself with the three kids. deKyn was getting so disruptive I had to take him out but I didn't have time to pull Taegyn out with me. By the time I went back in, I couldn't find her and Cory was trying to mouth it to me from up on the stand. Again my frustration was starting to boil over again. deKyn was still throwing his fit, so I found Taegyn and took them both out in the hall with me. After sacrament got out, a girl in the ward made some comment about "oh, you had to deal with your kids all by your self today?" She probably didn't mean anything by it, but to me it was a little condesending like she was trying to say a lot of us women do it, get over it it's not a big deal. I was trying really hard to hold back the tears at this point. Cory came out, drug deKyn to his class while I tried to take Taegyn to hers. And of course she didn't want to go so she starts throwing a fit. One of my friends was outside the door when I was trying to get Taegyn to go to her class. She asked if I was okay and that's when I started to cry again. I HATE crying in front of people. It's awkward not only for me but for them too. Cory came around the corner at that point and took Taegyn to class while I went to the girls bathroom to cry my eyes out. I composed myself for the second time and went to go find Cory to tell him I was going home when two more people asked if everything was all right. Every time someone new would ask that, I would tear up again and try to hold back the sobs.
I did finally end up going home and crying it out. The sad thing is, it started over something really dumb and every little thing set it off again. I guess sometimes all you need is just a really good cry. But I would rather that be in the privacy of my own home and not at church where everyone can stare at me.

My favorite cake that I have done so far has got to be this Black and White cake. I am surprised at how well it turned out.
